ATTS carried a consultancy mission for Concern Worldwide for women in five villages at Western Sudan (south Kordofan, Muglad locality). 32 women were trained during 2014 – 2015 in food processing to produce hygienic and nutritious food with longer shelf life. This provided a source of income generating activity. Women were trained in preparation of ready meals containing lentils and onion, tomato paste, jam from fruits and milk processed products (yogurt, ghee and cheese). Women were also trained in hygienic packaging for better marketing
Field visits was conducted by Professor Amir Bakeet and 2 day training workshop
Concern aims at supporting improvements that contribute to withstand frequent shocks
(especially drought and floods) and predicted changes in climate over the next 20 years. Inorder to promote and achieve uptake of climate smart agriculture techniques and systems,
Concern is proposing to explore viable opportunities for support and promotion. This
requires an understanding of conservation farming techniques currently or
historically practiced in West Darfur.
In order to promote and achieve uptake of climate smart agriculture techniques and systems Concern is proposing to explore viable opportunities
for support and promotion. This requires an understanding of conservation farming techniques currently or histo
rically practiced in West Darfur. Programmes that have successfully been implemented within Sudan such as FAO Food Security Project, IFAD
funded projects “Support to Small Traditional Producers in Sennar State” and Western Sudan Resource Management” may also provide valuable lessons on best practice in
terms of techniques and approaches that could be applicable to the West Darfur context.
The project is targeting some villages that are located within the green belt which runs from west to east of Khartoum state with a buffer zone of 20
meter and 200 meter width. It passes through localities of Omdurman, Ombaddah, and Karri in the west to Sharg El-Neel (eastern of the Nile) and
Bahri (Khartoum-North) in the east. A random of 100 households in the western localities and eastern localities will be selected for biogas project
implementation. Before installation of the biogas units, an awareness raising campaign, followed by sensitization and mobilization will be undertaken.
Certain criteria will be employed for selection. These include: biomass availability, water availability and households.
The project aims at empowering women building their capacities, provide opportunities to
participate in development through food security and income generating activities.
The Area of the study is Ombada province which is one of the five provinces constituting
Khartoum state. It was created in 1995 by Public Decision, its area is about 22,193 km2 and is divided into three localities; Ei
-Amir with total population of 377,000, El-Bugga with 435,000 and El-Salam which holds 500,000 persons. Most of the tribes of Sudan live in this area
depending on agriculture, commerce and livestock raising. Almost all are of rural background
with different traditions, customs and beliefs. Many are engaged in unauthorized jobs selling
cheap goods and manual labor. Combined animal raising and crop growing are also practiced.
The target group
. El-Salam area is chosen as the area of the study because most of the population are stable with land tenure o
wnership. Through our partnership with women centre for peace and development , basic information about women needs in that area was
availed to us expressing priority in capacity building in animal raising. 20 women engaged in adult education
will be chosen as a target group. They are chosen because they are able to read and write and because they will extend their knowledge to women with whom they are in
close contact with (training of the trainer).
Meat is viewed as a vehicle for many human food-borne diseases .A contemporary risk-based approach
to meat hygiene requires that hygiene measures should be applied at those points in the food chain
where they will be of greatest value in reducing food-borne risks to consumers. Abattoir workers
represent potential source of meat contamination.
They should be trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work. The provision of adequate hygiene training of abattoir workers is the responsibility of the operator. Unfortunately workers in slaughterhouses of Khartoum state did not receive any kind of vocational training in meat hygiene, improperly dressed and have poor perception of their role in securing meat safety. The objective of this action is to provide workers in slaughterhouses of Khartoum state with knowledge that improves their perception of meat, environment and personal safety; and to encourage and facilitate the development of skills that increase their professional and technical standing.
This project aims at the commercialization of goat farming method (s) practised by small holders in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains. A crossbreeding program of local goats with Saanen bucks will be initiated to upgrade their performance and .new market outlets will be identified to improve farmer's returns from goat keeping.
Target groups
Small goat holders, at community level, in the Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
Final beneficiaries
1. Small goat holders in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
2. Families in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
3. Local authority in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
4. Veterinary authority in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains .
Relevance of the action Small goat holders in the Nuba Mountains are not getting reasonable returns from goat farming. The indigenous goats have poor productive performance for genetic causes and face problems of inadequate nutrition is the dry season because of poor pasture cover & overstocking.. The latter often leads to conflicts between livestock owners .To resolve the current ominous development is probably to encourage keeping small numbers of productive animals instead of raising large numbers of unproductive animals; and to increase offtake percentage by improving the marketability of livestock in the NMs.
Final beneficiaries
1. Small goat holders in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
2. Families in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
3. Local authority in Kadougli locality of the Nuba Mountains.
